I hope you can all come out and hear this play read, I'm eager to hear how it sounds and if the characters have emotional connections to each other. It is tricky to dramatize an episode of your life; the real events seem already to be fraught with so much drama and pathos that i needed only to record them accurately. But it doesn't seem to work that way with playwriting; there is a real skill in making the mundane exciting and keeping your own judgements and memories of "how that was" to a minimum. Just because "it really happened that way" doesn't mean it will be interesting to watch or hear. Writing this play was a real exercise in keeping myself out of the story so the characters can tell theirs.
Here is an entry from my WRITING PAGE after the first reading of Bad Neighbors in 2010. Before the year is out I want to do another reading of it. Maybe at the Rendezvous (again!)
*I've finished my play BAD NEIGHBORS!
Last weekend my fabulous theater cohort Lori Stein hosted a play reading group at her house and one of the plays we read was B.N., it was very exciting. Instead of having scene/act divisions in the play, I'm trying to use music as transition. So i cobbled together a c.d. of 10 second snippets of Metallica songs to play between scenes. Well.... Louise did a valiant job, but i think the c.d. player was against the whole project from the beginning. But I still think it's a cool idea. It is definitely a heavy metal play.
I was spending a lot of time trying to fit this 50-ish minute play into a structure that it didn't want. Another theater/playwright friend, Persephone, suggested i remove the structure and that is exactly what it needed.

RIDING THE BULL by August Schulenburg
Geb Brown as G.L. Jen Smith Anderson as Lyza in RIDING THE BULL
I'm co-producing, designing the costumes and taking photos for a stream-of-consciousness slideshow that will play in this production of the new play, "Riding The Bull". The photos I'm obsessively taking will become "The greek chorus of the show," as director Richard Buckley says. (see my "photography" page!) We just met the other night with Owen who will put everything together! And I still have more photos to take....
